Founder of Greentree Waterproofing, Bill Merrifield, has heard and seen it all since 1992 and offers these tips to help you avoid being a victim of a scam.
Ask the contractor for a list of customers they have performed work for in your areawith phone numbers and CALL THEM! Do your homework and if you're only given one or two names don't be afraid to ask the customer for their address or if they'd mind taking a look at the contractors work. This way you can verify if they are actually former clients of that contractor. Do not rely on letters of recommendation.
Determine who you are actually dealing with and where they are from. Many companies listed in the Yellow Pages are operated by a franchise. You need to know their business in your community, affiliated or member of the BBB or local Chamber of Commerce and has a solid long term history.
Check with the local Better Business Bureau, or if there is none, check with the Chamber of Commerce, Attorney General's Office or Consumer Affairs.
Get a written estimate, have the contractor list the work in detail that is to be done. Read front and back, if there is a backside, and be sure to read any fine print.
Other than a small retainer such as 20% to secure your work date, never pay upfront for any work until it is completed. Location of the Waterproofing company is very important. Living in Illinois and contracting with a company out of Missouri, Indiana or any other state may represent a potential problem if an emergency should present itself. There are plenty of great companies in other states just be sure to inquire about their response time and do your homework by calling clients in your area that they have performed work hear their experience.
